Dana is also a noted writer, lecturer and television color commentator, and has an extensive background as a motivational speaker.
Dana Hee has been inspiring audiences ever since she won the gold medal in Taekwondo, at the 24th Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. Her story proves that the will to succeed and the conviction to never give up is what creates success. It’s an understatement to say that Dana’s childhood was hard. The child of divorced, alcoholic parents, she endured abuse, abandonment, and despair. The years of being passed back and forth between an orphanage, suicidal family members, halfway houses, a commune, government shelter, and finally a foster home, took their toll.
Dana grew up to be a young woman with little self-esteem or self-confidence, and a huge fear of failure. To her, nothing seemed possible. It was as if the two words, ‘I can’t’ were programmed into her mind, and she struggled to escape a lifelong habit of running from her fears. One day, at age 25, Dana looked within herself for strength and determined to make a change. Armed with an ounce of courage, and a glimpse of hope, she set out to make a dream of hers come true. Through this difficult, agonizing, against-the-odds struggle, she made a profound and lasting transformation – from a shy, under-achieving, below-average, young woman to an Olympic Gold Medalist with a new sense of self-esteem, and, finally, some hope for the future.
Her journey through this process – and the lessons everybody can take from it – are enough to inspire the most discouraged soul. But Dana didn’t stop there. She started accepting speaking engagements, then graduated to keynote speeches. She shifted from martial arts, to modeling, and then acting, before setting her sights on becoming a top Hollywood stuntwoman in the movie industry.
Dana Hee is a fantastic role model for any young martial artist, and is sure to be one of the top martial artists in the World for years to come.
Special Guest Martial Arts Master – Ibu Cynthia Rothrock, Queen of Martial Arts Films
Cynthia Rothrock is probably the greatest and the best known female martial artist/action film star in the world. She is without a doubt the undisputed “Queen of Martial Arts films”, having made more than 30 successful martial arts movies in the action movie haydays of the 1980s and 1990s. Unbeknownst to many of the people who enjoy her films, Cynthia Rothrock is not only a great action star, but also an incredibly accomplished martial artist. She holds 5 Black Belts – in Tang Soo Do (Korean), Tae Kwon Do (Korean), Eagle Claw (Chinese), Wu Shu (contemporary Chinese), and Northern Shaolin (classical Chinese).
Cynthia began martial arts at 13, at a friend’s parents’ private gym. A quick learner, her teachers soon encouraged her to compete in Karate. By 1982, Cynthia was one of the premier Kata (forms) and weapon competitors in the United States. Competing in divisions that were not segregated by male-female categories, she literally captured every title in both open and closed karate competition. From 1981-1985 she was the undefeated World Karate Champion in both forms and weapon competition. Establishing a legacy of wins and accumulating hundreds of trophies for her martial arts prowess; a feat that is unparalleled even to this day.
She is a consummate performer with such Chinese weapons as the Chinese Double Broad Swords, Staff, Chinese Nine-section Steel Whip Chain, Chinese Iron Fan, and an assortment of Okinawan Kobudo and Japanese Bugei Weapons. As a Forms and Weapon Champion, Cynthia Rothrock traveled the globe, performing to hundreds of thousands of people, and soon gaining martial arts celebrity status and within 2 years Cynthia became a household name (in martial arts circles!). She was featured on the cover of virtually every martial arts magazine in the world, and has been featured in over 300 stories and articles in national and international publications, including Black Belt Magazine (United States), Inside Kung-Fu (United States), Martial Arts Training (United States), Martial Arts Stars (United States), Inside Karate (United States), Ibu (Spanish-Argentina), China Sports (Beijing, China), Combat Magazine (England), Sushido (French), Karate Budo Journal (Germany), The Fighters (England), Martial Arts Illustrated (England), and hundreds of National and International newspapers.
Cynthia Rothrock is also one of the very select individuals to be inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame and Inside Kung-Fu Hall of Fame.
Cynthia’s first ‘starring role’ was in a Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial in the early 1980s. Her martial arts skills were soon spotted and her career began a steady climb. Cynthia’s first real movie was Yes Madam, also starring Michelle Yeoh. The movie turned out to be a hit – it broke all box office records in Hong Kong. Cynthia and Michelle were on their way to becoming two of the most successful female action stars in the world, and Cynthia found herself in Hong Kong filming spectacular Martial Arts action films. She spent five years starring in Asian-produced martial arts films. In that time she starred with kung-fu greats Samo Hung and Yuen Biao, and was even offered a role opposite of Jackie Chan in Armour of Gods – but Jackie got injured so the company instead put her in Righting Wrongs with super star Yuen Biao. During that Asian tenure she, unbeknownst to her, has set a record of becoming the very first non-Chinese westerner to carry an action movie single-handedly in Hong Kong. In fact, she left Hong Kong as one of the most celebrated action stars in Hong Kong’s cinematic history!
Hong Kong based film consortium Golden Harvest Productions (co-producer, with Warner Brothers, of Enter the Dragon starring Bruce Lee) tried to launch Cynthia’s Hollywood Movie career with a series of action films called China O’Brien and China O’Brien 2. Though not mega popular in domestic theaters, these martial arts movies went on to achieve cult status through video and cable TV – and are firmly placed among the all-time favorites for many a martial arts fan today.
Her amazing Martial Arts Movie career has earned her the indisputable title “Kung-fu Video Queen” and made her a household name everywhere, not just in Martial Arts circles. That’s why it is both a pleasure and privilege for us to feature Cynthia Rothrock, Martial Arts Legend, in Spirit2Power, alongside World Champions, a Grandmaster, and several Legends in the making. We have brought together the most impressive selection of Martial Artists ever to feature in a Martial Arts Docu-Movie.
